Case of Jason
Theory: Existential
Presenting Problem:
Jason, a 38-year-old Jewish Caucasian male, presents with severe depression characterized by feelings of loneliness, despair, and isolation. He works excessively 60-80 hours per week in his successful law firm because he believes it keeps him sane. Despite feeling respected in the Jewish community and feeling comfort and consoling in the weekly religious services, Jason is experiencing turmoil related to his romantic relationship with Kevin (a Mormon), which has become a source of both meaning and distress. Jason fears rejection and isolation from his family, community, peers, and clients if his relationship with Kevin is ever discovered.
Additionally, he is struggling with the betrayal he feels after discovering Kevin’s online explicit activities. Jason expressed having nightmares about being forced to wear a pink triangle while family, friends, and colleagues yell slurs and find Kevin in bed with another man.
